Mexico is condemning the separation of children from families on the US border as "inhuman". The Foreign Relations Secretary said the country can not ignore this injustice even if the children are not Mexicans.
LUIS VIDEGARAY MEXICAN SECRETARY OF FOREIGN RELATIONS "It's true, nonetheless, that the United States, not now, but in the past, doesn't necessarily recognize the jurisdiction of the international tribunals. That's the case, for example, of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, or the International Criminal Court. I insist, however, we will resort to agencies that are considered appropriate, and we will not rule out any option."
Luis Videgaray said only 21 children of Mexican nationality have been separated from their parents, a small fraction of the total. Seven have been returned home. Most of the kids are from Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras. Before the US withdrew from the UN Human Rights Council, the UN had urged America to respect the children's best interests.
CHRISTOPHE BOULIERAC UNICEF SPOKESMAN "Stories of children, some of them just babies, being separated from their parents as they seek safety in the US, are heartbreaking. Children - no matter where they come from or what their migration status - are children first and foremost."
