US Vice President Mike Pence arrived in Seoul on Thursday ahead of the opening ceremony in the mountain resort of PyeongChang, and met with Republic of Korea (ROK)'s President Moon Jae-in.
Moon reaffirmed his commitment to the US and pledged to play a key role in the denuclearization of the DPRK. "I always stress this but the most important thing is close cooperation between South Korea and the United States," the president said to Pence.
"The United States' firm stance and close alliance [with South Korea] contributed to DPRK's participation in South-North Korea dialogue and the Olympic Games," Moon said, according to Cheong Wa Dae pool reports. "We will work to take this opportunity and bring DPRK to the dialogue table for its denuclearization and the establishment of peace."

On Friday, before he attends the Olympic opening ceremony, Pence will visit a memorial for the 46 South Korean sailors killed in 2010 in the sinking of a warship that Seoul blamed on a DPRK torpedo attack.
The ceremony will also be attended by a senior delegation of DPRK officials, including Kim Yo Jong, the younger sister of leader Kim Jong Un, and Kim Yong Nam, president of DPRK's Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly. The delegation will have lunch with ROK President Moon Jae-in on Saturday.
