China's track cycling team is currently training for the Asian Games, which will get underway one month from today in Indonesia. The PRC women won gold in the team sprint at the 2016 Rio Olympics, but are now looking for younger riders to step up and extend their success, following the retirement of squad member Gong Jinjie. CGTN's Damion Jones has the details.
The main goal of China's new track cycling coach, Anthony Peden, is to keep the team at the top of the Asian ranks.
But the former Olympic competitor and sprint boss for New Zealand will have to make due without the retired Gong Jinjie, leaving him to find a new partner for her Rio 2016 gold winning squadmate, Zhong Tianshi.
ZHONG TIANSHI OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST "We actually have several candidates from our team, and all of them are in good form."
Peden is also working hard to enhance the men's prospects, with Xu Chao recording his best time in the 200-meter omnium earlier this year in Japan. But the 23-year-old is well aware that the competition in Jakarta will be fierce.
XU CHAO CHINA TRACK CYCLIST "I am trying to get into form by the Asian Games, but you know all the other countries are great challengers for us, so everything will be decided on the track."
China's track cyclists are viewing the 2018 Asian Games as a fresh start with a new coach, young talent infusion, and rapidly improving opposition. DJ, CGTN.
