As millions of people traveled out of town during the Labor Day holiday, China's southwestern city of Chongqing has gained widespread popularity among tourists. And it's not only because of its tongue-numbing hotpot. Jiang Shaoyi tells us what's luring tourists to the vibrant city.
This is the scenery from the Yangtze River Cableway. It's also what's drawing some tourists to Chongqing. During the three-day long Labor Day holiday, there's no stopping tourists here, even if it means queuing for hours in the crowds. The cableway used to be a means of transport to cross the river, but it was renovated as a tourist attraction and opened to the public in 2014. The rebranding seems to have worked.
TOURIST "I heard about the cableway in a mobile app, and it has also made Chongqing a sensation."
TOURIST "It's a unique means of transport that I must experience when I'm in Chongqing." Known as the "Mountain City", Chongqing has more than 30 million residents, and the city certainly knows how to make the most of its limited space. Its "Crown Escalator" has attracted many visitors for its 112-meter length -- which is China's longest. And this train that runs through a building demonstrates the optimum use of space. Many feel a glimpse of it is worth the journey to Chongqing.
TOURIST "I heard that this train is the only one of its kind in the country. It passes through the building so I guess it must demonstrate high-technology. I came to Chongqing this time especially for this."
The large number of tourists during the Labor Day holiday has also put a strain on the city's public transport. As it's the last day of the holiday, nearly 200-thousand trips are expected to be made out of railway stations in Chongqing. Local authorities have deployed extra train services to cope with the demand. Jiang ShaoyiXXX, CGTN.
