The UN Secretary-General marked the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on Wednesday by calling for an end to the harassment of women in the workplace.
Speaking in New York, Antonio Guterres classed workplace sexual harassment as a form of "sexual violence" and it would not be eradicated until "gender equality and the full empowerment of women" became a "reality."
The Secretary-General said the organization was "committed to addressing violence against women in all its forms."
Speaking at a conference following Guterres's comments, the UN Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict, Pramila Patten, spoke about a recent trip to Bangladesh, including Dhaka and Cox's Bazar saying she believed "widespread and systematic rape" was used "to shred the social fabric" to force civilians to flee the country.
