We begin in South Korea, where prosecutors are seeking a lengthy prison sentence and a hefty fine for former president, Park Geun-hye over a high-profile corruption scandal. Park's trial began in May last year and as CGTN's RORY COEN tells us a verdict is expected on April 6th.
Once again, the ousted president Park refused to appear at her final trial on Tuesday. Despite her absence, prosecutors are demanding a 30-year prison sentence, as well as a fine of more than 100 million US dollars. The 66-year-old was dismissed from her post last March, before being indicted on 18 charges, including bribery, abuse of power, and leaking state secrets. This year, prosecutors added fresh charges, such as violations of election laws. Park is also accused of colluding with her long-time friend, Choi Soon-sil, to extort nearly 55 million dollars from conglomerates, including Samsung and Lotte, in exchange for special treatment. She's also being indicted for allowing Choi to meddle in state affairs despite having no official post in government. The former president, however, denies any wrongdoing, saying the allegations are a political conspiracy.
Two weeks ago, Choi -- who was at the centre of the scandal -- was sentenced to 20 years in prison. And the scandal also drew in Samsung heir, Lee Jae-yong, who was sentenced to two-and-a half years on charges including bribery and embezzlement. The sentence was suspended for four years, however. The deadline for Park's detention on remand will expire on April 16 and the court hopes to wrap up the trial before then.
