Over a dozen preschool children were hospitalized for food poisoning in Lingshou County, north China's Hebei Province on Monday, Xinhua reported.

Children in a private preschool in the county began to vomit at around 1:00 p.m. after lunch in the school's cafeteria. According to a preliminary investigation, the accident was caused by staff mistaking nitrite for edible salt.

All children have been sent to the hospital and 13 of them have shown evident symptoms, but none are considered life threatening.

The investigation is ongoing.
