US President Donald Trump says talks with the DPRK on a summit with Kim Jong Un are going "very well". The aim is still to hold the meeting on the original date of June 12th in Singapore. The president was speaking after meeting with Joshua Holt. He's a Utah man who flew back to the US on Saturday after being held for two years in jail in Venezuela.
Earlier Trump tweeted that the summit was "likely" to happen as scheduled. The White House also announced it was sending an advance team of about 30 officials to Singapore to prepare for it. Our Washington correspondent Nathan King has more details.
Late Friday in Washington US President Donald Trump hinted that the summit he'd just cancelled may be back on, tweeting "We are having very productive talks with North Korea about reinstating the Summit which, if it does happen, will likely remain in Singapore on the same date, June 12th., and, if necessary, will be extended beyond that date." But he did not mention or perhaps did not know, that for the second time in just over month the leaders of the two Koreas were set to meet again- this time on the northern side of the border. So what does this intense Diplomatic dance mean for the Trump-Kim Jong Un summit?
Well, the White House announced just after the new Kim Jong-un/Moon Jae-in meeting that it was sending an advance team of about 30 officials to Singapore to prepare for a summit. This, just two days after White House officials warned, after Trump pulled out of the June 12th date, that reinstating that date might be unrealistic 'It's in like 10 minutes,' one official said. Trump took to Twitter Saturday again to deny that any official said that- and he also rejected news reports that his administration is divided over the wisdom of the summit, saying in part "Unlike what the Failing and Corrupt New York Times would like people to believe, there is ZERO disagreement within the Trump Administration as to how to deal with North Korea...and if there was, it wouldn't matter. The @nytimes has called me wrong right from the beginning!"
NATHAN KING WASHINGTON "So as yet no definitive word on whether the summit is back on, whether it will be held on June 12th or later or not at all, like so much of this Presidency it's like waiting for the next episode of your favorite soap opera- except this time the show is real."
