Short track speed skating was originally a demonstration sport before becoming an official Olympic event in 1992. At the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, there will be a total of eight short track events, split equally between the men's and women's side.
The Chinese delegation is no stranger to medals. In the previous Winter Games, the Chinese team claimed 12 golds in total, nine of which came from short track speed skating. South Korea has 21 Olympic gold medals in short track events, the most of any country.

China's flag bearer Zhou Yang in this year's opening ceremony previously won the women's 1,500m in both the Vancouver 2010 and Sochi 2014 Winter Games.
