We make our way to Belgium, where friends and supporters would pay tribute to Michael Goolaerts in his village of Heist-op-den-Berg in the Northern region of Antwerp. The 23-year-old passed away suddenly this weekend, after falling and suffering heart failure during the Paris to Roubaix Classic in France.
Supporters and friends signing a condolence book at the city hall to honour his memory. Television footage showed the young rider receiving CPR by the side of the road after crashing in the second cobbled sector of the 257-km race. He was subsequently taken to hospital but doctors were unable to revive him. Goolaerts is the third Belgian rider to die in recent years during a race. Antoine Demoitie passed away following a crash with a motorbike during the Gent-Wevelgem road classic in 2016.
