Now to South Africa, where two of the country's best hip-hop crews are busy preparing for this year's Dance Star World Masters in Croatia. The street-style dancing competition has attracted thousands of children from across the world. CGTN's Julie Scheier has this report on an event they're dubbing the Dance Olympics.
Excitement is building as South African hip-hop crews, Quarantine and Rebellion, prepare to face off against 28 other countries at this year's Dance World Masters in Croatia.
MARIO GOMES FOUNDER, MARIO GOMES HIP HOP DANCE ACADEMY "What I like about this competition is so many dance styles, you have ballet, you have contemporary, you have tap, you have hip-hop, you have street dance. This is the ultimate dance-style winner. So basically, what happens every country sends their best dance group, soloist style in every genre from the ages six to thirty-five old, so to us this means the world because I know dance does not have an Olympics so that is why we compare it to the Olympics."
For many crew members, some as young as seven, this will be their first shot at representing their team on the international stage.
RAHIL SINGH DANCE CREW "I love dancing and we don't do it just for fun, we do it because we want to do dancing and we are putting in the effort and now we have just made it to go to Croatia."
JENNA BARENDS DANCE CREW "I think our team is reaching to win in Croatia and to have lots of fun and our goal is to become number one and represent South Africa."
South African dance crews bring a different flair to the competition. They draw inspiration from local artists and dance styles such as kwaito, pantsula and sabuja, bagging them medals for the last two years.
MARIO GOMES MARIO GOMES HIP HOP DANCE ACADEMY "The judges do not want to see copycats so they do not want to see something they can see on YouTube or see on line and I think even this year the SA team is going to take it again because the standard here is just growing and that is what is so nice to see South Africa is not any more seen as a country that doesn't actually know or understand the dance industry but we are right up there."
JULIE SCHEIER JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA "Team South Africa will show 28 countries and more than four thousand dancers what they are made of, and they will be chasing gold."
DANIEL LENKA DANCE INSTRUCTOR "Whatever the move we do it could be a simple move like a hand but the way our dancers do it we have trained them so well that passion that you see on the stage from these kids you will never find anywhere so we are pushing our crews for gold this year."
These young crews will soon battle it out in Croatia, and they hope their best moves will rule the world. JS CGTN JHB SA.
