An American aircraft carrier has arrived in Vietnam for the first time since the end of the Vietnam War. CGTN's Chuck Tinte has the details of the historic visit.
Ties between Vietnam and the United States have grown considerably warmer since the war. The USS Carl Vinson and two other American ships began a five-day visit in the central city of Danang. More than six-thousand crew members were onboard the vessels. It marks the biggest US military presence in the country since the end of the Vietnam war in 1975.
JOSEPH CHENG POLITICAL ANALYST "It certainly means that the bilateral relationship has been completely normalised. The United States now is a very important trading partner with Vietnam and it is the most important destination of Vietnam's exports."
Washington normalized ties with Hanoi in 1995, and lifted an arms embargo in 2016. Since then, the former foes have steadily improved relations in all areas, including trade, investment and security. US officials are expected to visit a center for victims of Agent Orange -- a chemical weapon used by the Americans during the war. Vietnam's Foreign Ministry says the nation now enjoys what it calls a "friendship" with the US. This includes technical exchanges, and sports matches. Chuck Tinte, CGTN.
