A massive forest fire in Portugal has left 64 people dead and injured over 130 people. Many families were lucky enough to survive, but lost their belongings, as their houses have turned to ruins.
The forest fire, which ravaged the mountainous region of Pedrogao Grande, 200 km northeast of Lisbon, may have been caused by a lightning strike on June 17.
After the fire, some families returned to what used to be their home and found everything full of happy memories have been taken away by the fire, CGTN’s Michal Bardavid reports from the scene.
Waldburga Mueller and her husband went back to their house and found the blaze completely destroyed what was left behind.
She walked around the rubble in disbelief and recalled how peaceful it was living here.
Fortunately, the Muellers have found refuge at one of their neighbors who has taken them in.
Though the town of Pedrogao Grande has suffered a terrible loss and it will no doubt take a long time to recover, the people here are united and aim to overcome this tragedy together.
