Zimbabwe's first presidential and parliamentary elections since the end of former strongman Robert Mugabe's rule will take place in July. The country's president, Emmerson Mnangagwa, said the elections would be peaceful. He will announce the date in an official notice, adding he would invite western observers, who were banned under Mugabe's rule. The polls will be the first major test for the new leader, who took power in November after the 94-year-old Mugabe resigned. The voting will also be the first without Mugabe's name on the ballot since independence from Britain in 1980.
