Some movie news now. Marvel's "Black Panther" is making premieres across the African continent. In South Africa, film fans welcomed the stars of "Black Panther" on the red carpet in Johannesburg. CGTN's Julie Scheier was there, and filed this report.
"Black Panther" is already a major box office smash in America. Now it arrives on the Continent and represents all that is Africa. With two Oscar winners, Lupita Nyong'o and Forrest Whitaker, alongside a super-cast, Black Panther features some of Hollywood's most accomplished black actors.
LUPITA NYONGO ACTRESS "The movie is inspired very specifically by African cultures all around the continent and for me as an African myself I've seen films where there is a generalisation, and it hurts my soul, so to be apart of a film that helps bend on the proper representation and doing it with best simplicity than Wakanda, though it's a country that doesn't exist, it is influenced, it's formed by cultures and traditions that really do exist and we pay homage to them and we celebrate them, that's really meaningful."
CONNIE CHIUME ACTRESS "I believe its opening doors for the world, the world is becoming so small that America has become realistic. Marvel has made an example to be realistic to say if there is a role for an African let an African do it because they have done so many movies and some of them never succeeded because they were using people who didn't know Africa, who are not Africans so we all the nuances of our culture comes naturally."
JOHN KANI ACTOR "This movie gives us the opportunity, from artists from the continent of Africa to and artists who are Africans in the diaspora and made us collaborate with an incredible director Ryan who kept saying to me would this be believable in Africa, would this not insult the African culture, would this be embraced but we also said remember its commercial."
JULIE SCHEIER JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA "South African audience are showcasing their Wakanda colours at the black panther premiere and bringing positive attention to the African continent."
TUMI VOSTER RADIO PERSONALITY "I felt so proud and so happy, you know the saying 'what a time to be alive' I think this movie pretty much embodies all of that from beginning to the end and even the Black Panther album soundtrack have our local artists featured on such a huge album has been absolutely amazing."
BASETSANA KHUMALO FORMER MISS SOUTH AFRICA "It is a day that we can all begin to celebrate that our stories, our authenticity our uniqueness, what makes us South African can be appreciated by the world stage and to have our own stories being told on this global platform by really give kudos to the African narrative that our stories are rich with tapestry."
The Black Panther celebrates the African culture, with language, bright costumes and different African accents and it had everyone here chanting 'Wakanda forever!' Julie Scheier, CGTN JHB SA.
