African football icon Didier Drogba has been taking part in meetings in Addis Ababa which aim to extend healthcare provision across the continent. As part of his retirement philanthropy, Drogba has teamed up with some of Africa's top investors for this new drive. CGTN'S Coletta Wanjohi reports.
An African football legend, who's now focused on giving back. Didier Drogba's here in Addis Ababa to share some of his experience in the health sector. He's built a clinic in Abidjan but also offers mobile services.
DIDIER DROGBA RETIRED IVORIAN FOOTBALLER "So we go to different parts of the country, we stay there a week, a month and we screen people and the last campaign we did was about heart disease and we screened in two weeks more than 3000 people and it's very interesting because most of them don't know if they are in good health or not, so when you give the results they say 'oh my God I did not know I had hypertension, thank you', so that thank you pushes you to do more."
And Drogba says, for him, health and football issues are closely linked.
DIDIER DROGBA RETIRED IVORIAN FOOTBALLER  "Almost two years ago now one of my ex-teammates in the national team died of heart attack because he did not do the medical, so this is really important to me. I am a co-owner of a football team in the US and we are professionals but when the players were signing, we were not doing the ECG, so I told them, I said 'Listen, we have to do it before something bad happens', and this is just for the players, for their health and to protect also the club, but this is something really important we have to do it and a few months later this situation happened with my brother in China, so this is something that can be related to football and has to be related to football."
Through the foundation he set up in 2017, Didier Drogba has also built a school. This gives some 350 children access to education in the rural cocoa growing community of Ivory coast. And here in Addis, he says progress has been made.
COLETTA WANJOHI ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA "Together with other philanthropists like Nigeria's Aliko Dangote, Didier Drogba and other investors have agreed to channel more resources into the health access. They say this can be achieved through improved private-public partnerships. And Didier Drogba will hope he can hit the target as he sets his latest goals.
