Staying in Boao, where a session called "Religious Leaders Dialogue" has been held during this year's forum. CGTN presenter Tian Wei invited religious leaders from China and Singapore to share their perspective on Asia and the world. Timothy Ulrich has more.
Yin Shun, vice chairman of China's Buddhist Association, began sharing his view with several questions.
YIN SHUN VICE CHAIRMAN, BUDDHIST ASSOCIATION OF CHINA "The present world is going through major developments, transformations, and re-adjustments. What is happening to the world and against this backdrop, what should we do? People of the world are thinking very hard about this question, and politicians are also working on it. And it is always on the mind of President Xi Jinping. Of course to answer these questions, first, you've got to answer the following ones, where did we come from? Where are we now? And where are we going? "
Chief Reverend Zhang Gaocheng of Tongbai Gong Daoist Temple at Mountain Tiantai took global warming as an example for why we must practice frugality.
ZHANG GAOCHENG CHIEF REV., TONGBAI GONG DAOIST TEMPLE AT MOUNTAIN TIANTAI "All the issues of mankind are caused by greed. Issues arise when our desires go beyond the capacity of the material world. During his opening speech at the forum, President Xi Jinping talked about global warming. In the eyes of a Taoist, global warming has come as a result of the lack of frugality. There's too much demand. Mankind usually does not know when to stop asking for more. If we practice frugality, and are satisfied with what we have, global warming wouldn't be such a severe problem."
Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Singapore, John Chew, said self-improvement and additional efforts are crucial approaches.
JOHN CHEW BISHOP OF THE ANGLICAN DIOCESE OF SINGAPORE "In the context of the Holy Bible, love means more than the conventional love that we usually refer to, it comes at a price of extra efforts. We need to learn to walk the extra mile. So if we want to spread our influence in the world, we need to think beyond the role of a religious leader. Love from God is on everybody, good or bad. You need to love the ones who seem to be very hard to love. This is how we can elevate ourselves."
The leaders also expressed hope that mutual trust between different religions can be passed on, allowing religion to better provide warmth, comfort, and serenity to the world. Timothy Ulrich, CGTN.
