China: US Jerusalem move could escalate the tensions

China warned on Wednesday that the move by US President Donald Trump to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel could worsen the situation in the region.
"We are concerned about a possible escalation of tensions," spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said at a regular news briefing.
"All relevant parties should bear regional peace and tranquility in mind, be cautious in words and deeds, avoid impacting the foundation for the settlement of the issue of Palestine, and avoid causing new confrontation in the region," he added.
Trump is widely expected to say that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel during a speech on Wednesday, and announce the approval of the US embassy's relocation there from its current location in Tel Aviv.

His administration has argued the decision is based on the "recognition of reality" and does not aim to change the status quo.
Jerusalem is one of the most contentious issues in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The status of the city is expected to be settled during peace talks between the two sides. However, previous rounds of negotiations have crumbled amid acrimony, and no new talks are slated for the near future.
Palestinians say the eastern sector, which has been occupied by Israel since 1967, is the capital of their future state. While Israel claims Jerusalem as its capital, and considers the city as "undivided".
