Shopping expenses for Chinese tourists both at home and abroad saw a drastic decline in the first four months of 2017, according to a recent report.
The Chinese Tourism Consumption Bills Report, jointly released by Mafengwo, China's leading online travel agency, and Unionpay Smart, also identifies new trends in Chinese tourism consumption.

The report found that per capita shopping spending for Chinese tourists in domestic and international destinations decreased by 42 percent and 37 percent respectively in January to April compared to the same period last year.
At the same time, spending on culture, sports and entertainment during travel jumped by a whopping 334 percent.

Chinese tourists are increasingly looking to visit art galleries, enjoy the theatre or watch sports events, with the report claiming that the change in spending habits is down to Chinese tourists becoming more rational towards shopping, especially younger travelers.
Besides spending more on entertainment, the boom in cross-border e-commerce in China has also been a big factor in the substantial reduction in overseas tourism shopping.
