Singapore is making final preparations for the historic summit between President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un. The two will meet face-to-face next week. CGTN's Miro Lu reports.
MIRO LU SINGAPORE "The US has said preparations for the 12 June between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Singapore are going well.
But it said sanctions would not be lifted against North Korea unless it gave up its nuclear weapons.
Discussions on the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula are expected to be high on the agenda.
Yonhap news reported that Satellite imagery shows that the DPRK has been destroying a missile test stand in the wake of its leader's pledge to suspend testing of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles.
Most analysts I spoke to said they think the US and the DPRK don't have the same definition for denuclearisation. The US has been making it clear that it wants the DPRK to have CVID. But the DPRK is unlikely to get rid of its nuclear power which is a big bargaining chip for them.
Ahead of the summit, both parties have been engaged in a flurry of diplomatic activity.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov made an unexpected visit to Pyongyang. Singapore's Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan is heading to Pyongyang on the 7th and 8th. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, unable to meet North Korea's leader himself, is heading to Washington to try to make sure President Donald Trump doesn't overlook Japan's security and other concerns at the unprecedented US-DPRK Singapore summit next week.
Miro, the summit venue is finally confirmed and it will be held in the Capella Hotel on Sentosa, why that location and how prepared is Singapore to host this highly anticipated event.
Yes, it comes as a surprise for many, as this is not the traditional meeting place for major international events. Many have instead speculated that it should be Shangri-la Hotel on Singapore mainland. That venue has been tried and tested since the inauguration of the Shangri-La Dialogue, or Asia Security Summit since 2002.
But nonetheless, observers I spoke to said it is a sound choice. They said Capella is a good choice because in addition to being secure, it also has the right aesthetic, the right looks, for receiving two high-level dignitaries, head of states of respective countries. From an optical standpoint, in terms of media coverage, public perception, it's important an event is held in a grand way, with a very nice backdrop, in addition to being secured, because it is a historical moment after all.
In terms of the preparation, Singapore is more than ready.
