Our reporter He Weiwei has sat down with Henry Tang Ying-Yen, Former Chief Secretary of Hong Kong, who believes the decision to withdraw the bill will have a positive effect on the city.
HENRY TANG YING-YEN FORMER CHIEF SECRETARY OF HONG KONG "I think we have reached a turning point for the better. I think it was very important. It's a crucial point that the formal withdrawal, a formal retraction of the fugitive ordinance bill, will allow the community to have a rest."
HE WEIWEI CGTN REPORTER "You said that you are willing to host a direct dialogue between Carrie Lam and other protesters. If so, what topics do you hope to be discussed?"
HENRY TANG YING-YEN FORMER CHIEF SECRETARY OF HONG KONG "Well, I have suggested to the chief executive to start a dialogue with the community. I would imagine that they would want to raise whether universal suffrage and then they would want to raise how to pursue a constructive dialogue in many of the issues, and the weaknesses of the Hong Kong community."
HE WEIWEI CGTN REPORTER "Do you anticipate any other key announcements? How do you see things going forward?"
HENRY TANG YING-YEN FORMER CHIEF SECRETARY OF HONG KONG "I think it is important that we will continue to develop our economy. But on top of that, I think it is very important now that we find ways to let the community heal from the movement recently, as well as how to engage our younger generation better."
