The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has added Cambodia's seventh century Sambor Prei Kuk temple complex to its World Heritage List.
Built by Isanavarman I, King of the Chenla Empire more than 1,200 years ago, Sambor Prei Kuk means "temple of the richness of the forest” in the Khmer language. The archaeological site was listed as a World Heritage Site during the World Heritage Committee’s 41st session in Krakow, Poland.
The site is Cambodia’s third tangible cultural property to be inscribed on the World Heritage List.
Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen said the inscription was another historic event for Cambodia in preserving and developing its cultural heritage. The prime minister also called on citizens to step up efforts in protecting the country’s national cultural heritage.
