Co-Productions: Chinese filmmakers embrace globalization
[]
China's thriving movie sector has been attracting major attention and investment at home and abroad. Chinese filmmakers have been eager to work with foreign colleagues for the most part and that's led to a string of successful big-screen co-productions in recent years. Here's more on the phenomenon.
Released for the 2017 New Year season, 'The Great Wall' was a milestone in China's co-production filmmaking. Directed by Zhang Yimou, the joint venture between China and the United States featured Matt Damon, Jing Tian, and Pedro Pascal. The film grossed over 300 million US dollars.
China has signed co-production agreements with nearly 20 other countries. In addition to Hollywood studios, Chinese filmmakers have also sought partners in Europe, Africa, and other Asian countries.
Apart from investment, co-productions also offer opportunities to import filmmaking techniques and knowhow. And with their world-class production values, co-productions have seen their share at the box-office growing rapidly. As China pledges further opening up, the future is bright for big-screen joint ventures.
