Tens of thousands of supporters for both Liverpool and Tottenham traveled from across the globe to Madrid to be part of the all-English Champions League final and the festivities organized in the Spanish capital. Filio Kontrafouri reports on how fans celebrated the day of the ultimate game of European club football.
Euphoria, Celebration, Relief, as Liverpool was crowned champions of Europe for a sixth time. It was a momentous occasion not just for fans around the world, especially for those who travelled from the city of Liverpool.
LIVERPOOL FANS "You can see what it means. There are thousands of people that have come without tickets and they have come in their thousands. It means everything to us." "We have all come in coaches and all of that, we are here, aren't we? Have won it sixth time. Ah!"
Liverpool won 2-0, courtesy of the fastest goal in Champions League history. It was a penalty by Mohammed Salah in less than two minutes after the game began. They sealed victory with a second goal minutes before the end.
Spanish authorities had decided not to show the match on public screens around the city. Tens of thousands of fans without tickets flocked to bars to watch the game. Bar owners around the stadium struggled to accommodate them and fans from both teams watched the match side by side.
FILIO KONTRAFOURI MADRID "Police tried to keep the fans of the two teams separate before and after the game. Both sets of fans had to even take different metro lines to and from the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium."
During the day, they were also separated in two different fan zones. Tottenham fans were fewer in number yet full of enthusiasm. And it was because of one reason.
TOTTENHAM FAN "There are no words, this is the first time this has happened in our history."
TOTTENHAM FAN "I would say next to the birth of my kids it's probably the most important day of my life. This is absolutely spectacular. Nothing was going to stop me from being here."
Liverpool were pre-match favorites and they knew it. Their hugely loyal fan base was once again out in full force.
LIVERPOOL FAN "It's not a club it's a religion. That's what Liverpool football club is. We are united. Not one ounce of trouble we are enjoying ourselves and take that cup back to Liverpool."
Liverpool has now moved up to third place as the most successful teams in European Cup history. And as the trophy makes its way back to their home town. The party is only beginning. Filio Kontrafouri, CGTN, Madrid, Spain.
