Cui Zhicheng, head of Beijing's Daxing district, resigned Wednesday after a fatal department fire killed 19 people on November 18.
19 people, including eight under 18, were killed due to carbon monoxide poisoning when refrigeration equipment in the basement caught fire while going through a testing phase that night.
On Wednesday, several officials, including the deputy head of Beijing's Daxing District Du Zhiyong, were also suspended from their positions and put under probe, according to municipal discipline inspection bodies.
"As the leader in charge of safety work in the District, Du was not strict with daily safety inspections and failed in supervision and was responsible for the accident."
Following the fire, Beijing has launched a 40-day fire safety check throughout the city, starting from November 20.
