In Somalia, the celebration of Eid al-Fitr means different things to different people. Unlike previous years, this year is seeing a boom in business as the country is much safer. CGTN's Abdulaziz Billow reports from Mogadishu.
For the last one month Muslims around the world have been fasting from dawn to dusk. Eid Al Fitr marks the end of the fasting period. For some it means a new beginning - new clothes. For traders it's brisk business. The city's clothing stores have been a buzz with activity as residents troop in to shop for the latest designs.
This year Eid is different from previous years - the city is stable - shoppers come out late at night to buy things. Business is really booming.
We have recorded good sales during this year's Eid preparations. Many people have come to buy things. I wish all Somalis a happy Eid -- wherever they are in the world.
Good sales have meant working overtime. Malls like this one in downtown Mogadishu remain open until late at night.
"This year I am shopping for Eid at night. In the past, we would only do it during the day. I am happy and looking forward to celebrating."
In a country still recovering from years of lawlessness security remains a major challenge. The government has now banned the sale of toy guns ahead of this year's festivity - in a bid to educate the country's children on the dangers of weapons. Still - nothing is being left to chance. There's increased security in and around the city - the militant group the Al shabaab though pushed out of the capital continues to launch sporadic attacks. For many though nothing can stop their excitement on this special day- they say it's all about love -celebrating life with their loved ones.
ABDULAZIZ BILLOW MOGADISHU, SOMALIA "The holiday is special to Muslims and on such a day, Muslims are supposed to give Zakat ul-Fitr or charity to the poor. By so doing, it ensures everyone in the community can join in Eid feasts and festivities. AB, CGTN, M, S."
