Vice president and managing editor of the Associated Press (AP) Brian Carovillano talked about "Why we need investigative journalism more than ever" on the just-concluded China Global Television Network (CGTN) Global Media Summit 2017. He emphasized the constantly great significance of in-depth journalism in the past up to the present.
The origins of investigative journalism came from the concept that a society needs free expression right. Thanks to the the work of journalism which had changed and continued to change the course of history, the idea of deeply investigating a single topic for a long time, the beginning of investigative journalism, finally derived from the revolution of the whole industry, said the managing editor.
The booming of social network is a big challenge to traditional journalism. "Social network is causing information crisis, makes fake news believable, and real news easily dismissed by politicians as fake," Carovillano said. Carovillano believes, however, that by investigating and utilizing modern technology means, investigative journalism can turn a challenge into an opportunity.
