On May 12th, 2008, a magnitude 8 point zero earthquake hit Southwest China's Wenchuan, killing nearly 70 thousand people, and leaving 18 thousand missing and millions homeless. It's been ten years since the devastating quake. Relief work and reconstruction have continued to help restore the area to what it used to be.
In the three years following the quake, the Chinese government allocated 30 billion yuan in support for earthquake recovery and reconstruction. UNICEF China and several agencies of the Chinese government also launched a disaster risk reduction program in Sichuan, aiming to help make children, families and communities less vulnerable to and better prepared for disasters. Reports by the Chinese Academy of Science show that the environment is returning to normal in the quake zone. Of the worst hit townships surveyed, 61 percent now have more vegetation, and 63 percent have less soil erosion.
