A police officer from Chuxiong, southwest China’s Yunnan Province, has been hailed as an online hero after a photo of him keeping an abandoned baby warm by wrapping the baby with his uniform became a sensation on China’s social media. The Samaritan identified as Wu Yu rushed to Futa Park on Tuesday evening after being informed by locals that a newborn had been abandoned in the woods. /Weibo Photo
After arriving at the scene and spotting the shivering infant, whose lips had turned purple in the freezing temperatures, Wu immediately wrapped the baby in his uniform and jumper, and then held the baby close in order to warm him with his body heat. The newborn is now in stable condition and the local police bureau is working with the civil administration department to find the child's parents, Chinanews reported. /Weibo Photo
Since the photo, capturing half-naked Wu holding the infant in his arms was posted on China’s Twitter-like Weibo, tens of thousands of netizens have praised the policeman, defining his act of kindness as being a moment of warmth in winter. “I’m also from Chuxiong. The policeman is the pride of our community,” @Musedaayi commented. /Weibo Photo
Wu however, didn't expected the act to make him an instant national celebrity. “It is just an instinctive reaction of a parent and responsibility of a policeman,” the father of a one-year-old told Chinanews, adding “whoever the policeman is, they would make the same decision.” /Weibo Photo
