Davis Cup: Nadal outclasses A. Zverev 6-1, 6-4, 6-4
[]
We bounce over to tennis, and quarter-final action in the Davis Cup. Quite a marquee match-up World number one Rafa Nadal facing fourth-ranked Alexander Zverev. The German can clinch victory for his side with a win, as they led 2-1 in the team tally. But Rafa, was riding a record 23-match winning streak in the event, and was looking to even the proceedings.
Nadal, won his opening match in straight sets, and it looks like that will happen here, as he blitzes past the German in the opener, winning it 6-1 pouncing on a drop shot and slamming the winner home.
The 20-year-old is more competitive in the second, but the world number one, was in a zone, whipping a forehand out wide that his opponent cannot reach. Nadal wins it 6-4.
In the third, Rafa starts doing Rafa things, whipping another forehand out wide that lands for a winner in the fifth game.
Nadal claims a straight sets win in two hours and 16 minutes. That victory evening the overall tally between the teams -- making it 2-all.
That means the final match between David Ferrer in red against Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber would decide things.
The opener goes to a tiebreak, and Ferrer, the world No.33 clinches it with a stunning lob and takes a 1-set to love lead.
Kohlschreiber wins the next set, and third also needs a tiebreak, and Ferrer has the advantage and leads 6-4, and during this exchange at the baseline gets a little lucky, with a return clipping the net, handing him the frame, and a 2-1 lead.
Kohlschreiber returns that favour in the tenth game of the fourth, as a return he hits, also clips the tape, and lands in -- we are even at two sets each, and need a decider.
And in the final set, it is Ferrer who earns a late break, and is serving to clinch the match -- the Spaniard returns everyone of Kohlschreiber's shots and finally whips a backhand cross court, victory in four hours and 51 minutes on court. Spain beat 3-2 and are into the Davis Cup semi-finals for the first time since 2012. They meet France next, as they overcome Italy. Croatia outlast Kazakhstan 3-1. The United States are the semis as they dominated Belgium team 4-0.
