This year's three-day BRICS Summit, hosted by the coastal city Xiamen, starts Sunday. The summit will pave the way for more practical cooperation among the five BRICS nations and other developing countries.
How do people around the world see the five countries? We did an online survey on CGTN's social media accounts. Followers around the world shared their thoughts on these five countries. Take a look!
Brazil - Land of the palm trees
When asked for their impressions of Brazil, the top three words were carnival, samba and the Amazon rainforest. But Brazil is much more than these three things – the country has a colorful combination of both modern and traditional culture.
Russia - Toughness combined with gentle sensibility
The top three things our online followers attributed to Russia were vodka, power and abundant natural resources. Despite a powerful military, Russia also has a soft side. A participant commented, "I thought the people there are aggressive and uncompromising. Actually the life style and people there are chill and friendly."
India - Incredible country in South Asia
The top three keywords mentioned by followers were curry, yoga, and diverse. While these are staples of the culture, India is transforming itself quickly. Urbanization is occurring at a breakneck pace, with the speed of growth in cities offering big opportunities for its citizens.
China - Tradition meets innovation
China long ago emerged as one of the world's earliest civilizations. The top three keywords mentioned for impressions of China were panda, delicacy and Peking opera. While most know about China's cultural heritage, China has also seen fast growth in the last couple decades. Tech giants like WeChat, Alibaba and Tencent are all part of China's growing economy.
South Africa - Natural beauty mixes with science
For impressions of South Africa, the top three keywords mentioned were beach, red wine and multi-cultural. South Africa has a variety of beaches with dramatic views and of course, good red wine. But the country is not only about beautiful scenery and wine, several important scientific and technological developments have originated there, including the first human-to-human heart transplant, the vaccine against yellow fever and X-ray computed tomography.
