Building site managers in the eastern Chinese city of Jinan have got creative with covers used to protect drying concrete this winter.
An aerial view of the colorful quilts they have used on an overpass being built in the capital of Shandong Province creates the impression that it is some kind of street art.
It is actually a temporary method to protect the unfinished construction from freezing air. Why keep it warm, you may ask; is concrete not supposed to freeze-dry?
In fact, cold is bad for concrete as it limits evaporation.
In northern China, construction sites generally pause building with concrete for several months, using all kinds of methods to protect their work.
If any sections are frost-damaged, they would have to be replaced.
This Jinan overpass is guaranteed solidity now. And it has prettified the plain, boring winter to boot.
From workmen to commuters to concrete blocks, it seems we all need some warmth and color in our lives right now!
