The so-called 'Fourth Industrial Revolution' is taking the center stage at the Davos meeting. Indonesian President Joko Widodo wants Indonesia to embrace this new trend, urging sectors from agriculture to manufacturing to take on new technology. But analysts say the country has a long way to go before it can implement these technological advances. CGTN's Silkina Ahluwalia reports from Jakarta.
Arumdalu Lab is one of Indonesia's first innovative food technology research centre. A space surrounded by greenery, Albert says this is the place where creativity is explored and nurtured. The company aims to improve Indonesia's current food and agricultural systems.
ALBERT PRAMONO CEO OF ARUMDALU "One thing we are already doing at the moment and experimenting is water level sensor. That is very important because when you have 100 hectares of farm, you don't know the water level in one area. With the combination of drone technology and pest management and nutritional management on sensor level, we can have more than 100 farms around Jakarta and only one main center in Jakarta."
Using technology to improve irrigation and fertilization systems to growing plants using computer-controlled climate are just some of the many benefits of industrial 4.0. Indonesia's agriculture industry is important to the country's economy. Millions of small-scale farmers depend on the sector for their livelihood.
SILKINA AHLUWALIA JAKARTA, INDONESIA "That's why President Joko Widodo is working to support and protect the agriculture and the food and beverage industry. It's one out of five industries that are being developed and are expected to become the backbone of Indonesia's Industry 4.0."
The other industries include textile, automotive and manufacturing. President Widodo believes those industries would improve the competitiveness of local products in the global market and create more jobs.
MEVIRA MUNINDRA DIGITAL EXPERT "When it comes to industrial revolution, the trend is going to be more at location. The organizations may need less people in the field like factories but they may require more skilled resources. We are still lacking that criteria right now, the skilled resources in these organizations especially towards the industrial revolution. So it will take more jobs but skilled ones."
Indonesia is working to achieve the goal of becoming one of the 10 largest economies in 2030. Taking small steps towards Industry 4.0 can help the country achieve that goal faster. Silkina Ahluwalia, CGTN, Jakarta.
