It will be the fourth time that the DPRK and South Korea will march together behind a unification flag at the Olympics. Rory Coen takes a quick review at their past joint parades at the games.
The white-and-blue flag made its first appearance 18 years ago when athletes from the two countries walked together behind it at the opening ceremony of the Sydney Olympics.
It was a highly emotional event when "Arirang", a traditional Korean folk song played in the venue during their march.
The historical moment came amid a wave of hope for reconciliation following their leaders' first-ever summit talks.
Four years later, the two teams made their second joint entry under the same flag at the start of the Summer Games in Athens.
Since then, South Korea and the DPRK had kept frequent contacts in sports.
And that led to a third joint parade between the two sides at the Torino Winter Olympics in Italy in 2006.
However, all three joint marches took place during south's "Sunshine" policy era of engaging of the north from 1998 to 2008.
