2019 Osaka G20 Summit: Leaders to discuss economic growth, trade during meetings
Updated 17:09, 09-Jul-2019
We start in Japan, where the fourteenth G20 Summit is scheduled to kick off Friday in Osaka. The G20 is a forum for international economic cooperation that represents eighty percent of global GDP. This year, economic growth, trade and investment top the agenda. CGTN's Terrence Terashima brings more on the security preparations and other concerns ahead of the summit.
Security in Osaka has never been tighter. Many residents are overwhelmed by the commotion caused by the G20 summit scheduled from Friday.
Leaders and representatives from thirty-seven countries and organizations are expected to attend the summit. Thirty thousand officials and members of the press are already pouring into the city. Police officers have been brought in from all over the country to reinforce security. Thirty-two thousand officers will be deployed to the venue and the accommodation of the G20 leaders, as well as potential targets for terrorists. Almost ten thousand more police have been deployed compared to the G7 summit held in Japan three years ago.
Police say they will also use radio jammers to prevent drone attacks on the venues. People are concerned that it will affect business. Many businesses and facilities have already announced the decision to close for the duration of the summit.
The gathering comes amid trade tensions between China and the United States and the announcement of new sanctions imposed on Iran.
The potential meeting between Presidents Xi Jinping and Donald Trump is attracting a lot of attention. The phrasing of the joint communique on trade issues will be put under the spotlight. Also, how Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe addresses the importance of free trade, as well as the rising tensions building up in the Middle East. The U.S.-Iran tensions follow Abe's visit to Iran earlier this month.
TERRENCE TERASHIMA TOKYO "The Japanese press say Abe is expected to tread lightly on China-U.S. trade, but will likely seek closer diplomat exchanges with President Xi. It will be a challenge for the Japanese leader to show results as the host nation of the G20 summit. Terashima, CGTN, Tokyo."
