Just days before going under the hammer at the 2019 Guardian Spring Auction, more than 6,600 items are unveiled to the public in Beijing. The three-day preview began on Thursday at the Beijing International Hotel and Beijing Guardian Arts Center. Sun Wei takes us there.
Chinese ink painting and calligraphy make up a major portion of the auction, featuring masterpieces in the category, including "Meditation Room" by Ni Zan, "Lingyan Mountain" by Zhang Daqian and Qi Baishi's "Stealing Peach".
Taking the center stage is the stream of conciousness painting by Wu Guanzhong- called Lion Grove Garden - expected to fetch over 100 million yuan or about 14.5 million US dollars.
HU YANYAN PRESIDENT OF CHINA GUARDIAN "The items here are spread across various categories such as painting, calligraphy, porcelain, classic furniture and music instruments. Leading the show is the painting by Wu Guanzhong - Lion Grove Garden. It's here as a tribute paid on Mr. Wu's 100th birthday. It's expected to be the top auctioned item this time, with an estimated price exceeding 100 million yuan."
Another eyecatching section is about the Buddhist Art, with scores of gold Buddha statues in various forms. President Hu Yanyan holds a positive outlook towards the upcoming sales.
HU YANYAN PRESIDENT OF CHINA GUARDIAN "As a whole, the auction market looks stable this year. Especially for the high-end market. A large number of collectors have come to consult with us since we printed out the auction list. We see warm interest in the goods to be auctioned."
In the Imperial Order section, ancient ceramics and palace collections offer more highlights.
SUN WEI BEIJING "In the meantime, a collection of contemporary and 20th century art works are being exhibited at Beijing's Guardian Arts Center, including modern Chinese painting and calligraphy as well as German artist Anselm Kiefer's work of neo-expressionism.
