Worshipping in Buddhist temples is one of many important traditions on the Lunar New Year Day. It's said to bring good luck to Chinese people for the whole year. CGTN's Wang Mengzhen takes us to the Hongluo Temple on the outskirts of Beijing.
In the eyes of many Chinese, burning the first incense sticks and striking the bell for the Chinese Lunar New Year means bringing good fortune for the whole year ahead.
VISITOR "I came here 7:30 in the morning today. I come here every year on the first day of the New Year. I wish the country success and prosperity, and good health for my family."
VISITOR "I will take the University entrance examination this year. I hope to have a good outcome and my family is healthy and everything goes well."
VISITOR "Praying on the first day of the New Year is very effective. I wish to have a baby this year."
WANG MENGZHEN BEIJING "From very early in the morning, worshippers flock to Hongluo Buddhist temple, some 50 kilometers outside downtown Beijing despite the cold, lack of sleep and long drive. An estimated 20 thousand people visit the temple today. The number seems huge for a single-day visit. But, the Lama temple in downtown Beijing attracts an even bigger crowd. Many worry about potential air pollution caused by incense burning. But Hongluo temple staff say the incense is environmentally friendly."
YUAN JING, MANAGER TOUR GUIDANCE DEPT, HONGLUO TEMPLE OF BEIJING "Our incense sticks are custom-made of sandpaper, timber and clay. We've taken environmental factors into account. And we usually worship with three sticks together."
WANG MENGZHEN BEIJING "During the Chinese New year holidays, also known as the Spring Festival, the Hongluo temple also hosts a fair with local snacks, folk performances, and 5 thousand lanterns ready to usher visitors into this week-long holiday. WMZ, CGTN, BEIJING."
