Among the many environmental puzzles the world's researchers are trying to solve as people use up more and more resources, water usage ranks very high. An event in China has brought in inventors for a chance to show off their ideas. CGTN reporter Mark Fontes went to Foshan City in Guangdong Province and talked to those whose ideas for wastewater treatment are flowing strong.
China's environmental problems ebb and flow with its water pollution.
An estimated one third of industrial wastewater and close to 90 percent of household sewage finds its way into rivers and lakes without treatment. Experts say most of China's wastewater is polluted beyond international standards, and cannot be efficiently recycled.
Well, a company from Taiwan may have a technologically innovative solution.
LI DAQING, GENERAL MANAGER QING JING LUMINOUS ENERGY SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY CO. "Our products are designed to prevent and control sewage runoff from factories and various industries. By using an oxidant generated by ultraviolet light, it'll quickly and efficiently decompose and degrade organic pollutants on a large scale. This will help reach international standards for emissions, recycling, and environmental sustainability."
Li is one of many experts who have descended on Foshan City for the 10th International Exhibition of Invention, and the third World Invention and Innovation Forum.
He says he is optimistic about the future development of technological innovation in the Chinese mainland, adding that the broad market potential makes him want to develop his company here. Li hopes to exchange more of his ideas with other forum and expo participants.
YU HUARONG, SECRETARY-GENERAL CHINA ASSOCIATION OF INVENTIONS "We support our local inventors and their patents, and we welcome innovative talents from all over the world. By building a platform like this, we enable people to exchange and cooperate better, which can promote further transformation of advanced technological achievements into new products to benefit the whole society."
Meanwhile, a Swedish-based green technology company has brought its own sustainable sanitation solutions to Foshan. Enter the biologically sustainable toilet, made by EcoLoo.
The odor free, water free, sewage-and-chemical free toilet promises to solve China's lack of water resources.
IMAD AGI CHAIRMAN & CEO, ECOLOO GROUP "It's actually in China has been organized very well, the president of China has emphasized."
As the saying goes, lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets.
Experts at the events agree that social development must go hand-in-hand with sustainable environmental development. And in this new era of scientific and technological innovation, there's no doubt that more enterprises and organizations worldwide will add their voices to the call for green development.
