US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that enhancing "people-to-people exchanges" with China is extremely important.
Trump made the remark during his meeting with Chinese Vice Premier Liu Yandong at the White House.
In the meeting, Liu said the two countries have held a fruitful social and people-to-people dialogue and she hopes both sides can join hands to promote cooperation in fields including education, science, culture, health, sports and environmental protection.
Beijing welcomes Trump's state visit to China later this year at Chinese President Xi Jinping's invitation, and is willing to work with Washington on the preparations to make the visit a historic success, Liu said.
For his part, Trump said he is looking forward to his upcoming state visit to China and meeting with Xi again. He believed the visit would be a success.
Co-chaired by Liu and US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, China and the US held their first social and people-to-people dialogue on Thursday in Washington, DC.  It is one of the four high-level mechanisms established between the two countries.
"People-to-people exchanges" can cover a wide range of areas including education, tourism, and more NBA games played in China. In recent years, exchanges between the two peoples have seen fruitful outcomes as cooperation continues to move forward.
