Back to South Africa now, where Nakita Smith may not realize it yet, but her love for riding dirt bikes is breaking boundaries in a male-dominated sport. This eight-year-old girl from Johannesburg participates in regional motocross races, and recently placed fifth overall, in the boy's classification. CGTN's Julie Scheier has the details.
Nakita Smith was introduced to dirt bikes when she was three. Today, the eight-year-old races against boys, making a name for herself.
NAKITA SMITH MOTOCROSS RIDER "I like the speed of the bike, and I like beating boys to see how fast I can ride on a motorbike, and also to win stuff, medals and trophies, and it's nice to win and beat boys, but I just don't want to win, I also want to have fun."
Nakita was introduced to the sport by her dad. They now share the same passion and train together.
BRAD SMITH MOTOCROSS RIDER "It all started off a couple of years ago, racing was never an idea, and we never thought we would go that way. We just happen to move onto a small holding that had a PV-50, and at the age of three she rode the bike with training wheels, but got the concept, and the idea, and that is where it started."
NANDA SWIEGERS MOTOCROSS COACH "Everything in life you learn from your parents, so I think for me to teach Brad the correct way, when she looks at her dad she can see what he is doing, and if he is doing it correctly, she will do it correctly. I mean she loves her dad, she spends time with her dad all the time, they ride and they enjoy it, so it is important that the dad do it right, and then the child will also do it right."
As for the future, Nakita hopes to change the face of motocross in South Africa, and get more girls involved in the sport.
NAKITA SMITH MOTOCROSS RIDER "One day, if one day comes, I want to be the best. I want to teach other riders to ride, and I want to get more girls to race, boys always think they can be the best, but girls can also do what boys do, so everything is not just about the boys. It is about everyone."
And taking on the international stage is the next step for this young rider. JULIE SCHEIER, CGTN, HEIDELBERG, SOUTH AFRICA.
