Thousands of Chileans marched Sunday to mark the 44th anniversary of the military coup d'etat that abruptly put an end to President Salvador Allende's government in 1973.
At the end of the march, some protesters clashed with police.
Riot police used water cannons to disperse protesters after hundreds marched earlier outside La Moneda Presidential Palace.
The government estimates that during the Augusto Pinochet dictatorship, which lasted from 1973 to 1990, 3,095 people were killed, including roughly 1,200 who were forcibly "disappeared".
In all, 40,018 people were killed, tortured or imprisoned for political reasons.
The anniversary of the coup is often marked by violence.
