Chinese President Xi Jinping Friday visited an exhibition marking the 30th anniversary of the establishment of Hainan Province in Haikou, hailing its development achievements over the past decades, especially over the past five years.
During the visit, Xi asked about the transportation and other infrastructure planning and constructions of Hainan Province, saying that transportation and other infrastructure construction should protect the ecosystem instead of destroying it.
Xi also visited the Shicha Village, Shishan Town in Haikou City of Hainan Province and talked with farmers working in the village. Xi said that rural revitalization depends on industry, and industrial development must have its own characteristics. "We must develop scientifically and take a path fitting with its actual situation," he added.
Hainan's rapid development
In 1988, Hainan Island, formerly an administrative region of Guangdong Province, became a province and the largest special economic zone in China.
As Chinese President Xi Jinping pointed out during the opening ceremony of the 2018 Boao Forum for Asia (BFA), Hainan stands as an important historical witness of China’s reform and opening up.
During the past 30 years, Hainan Province – a tropical island that is roughly the size of Switzerland – has developed from the youngest economic zone of the country into one of the most vibrant economies.

According to the Hainan provincial government work report this year, Hainan will take an active role in collaborating with the fellow Pan-Pearl River Delta cities as well as the Greater Bay Area to deepen cooperation with Guangdong Province, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.
