Firefighters barely took two seconds on Saturday to stop a man from attempting to take his life in Yantai City of east China’s Shandong Province. At 18:11, the man was found sitting on the extended window sill over an air-conditioner on the fourth floor of a residential building. Firefighters and police officers soon arrived at the site. To keep the man distracted, the firefighters and policemen began their rescue work separately. Some worked to prepare an air cushion on the ground, others tried to persuade him to get off the sill. He was even offered water and cigarettes by one of the firefighters, but to no avail. It was difficult for the firefighters to pull the man inside the apartment, since he was sitting behind a window screen on the ledge. However, they finally took a narrow chance to drag him inside the room. As it turns out, the man had suffered serious mental trauma on being cheated by his boss, and as a result wanted to commit suicide. He climbed up the building’s drainage pipe to reach the window ledge on the fourth floor. He was later sent to a local police station, and is currently waiting to be sent back home.
