We conclude with cricket as the Women's T20 World Cup is looming on the horizon and will take place from November 9th to the 24th in the West Indies. South Africa recently got a chance to test their skills against the hosts when they took on the Windies in a One-Day International and T20 series and the matches which allowed the Proteas to sum up conditions before the tournament. CGTN's Sias du Plessis has more.
The series against the West Indies has provided the South African team with plenty to think about ahead of the 2018 edition of the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean next month and captain Dane van Niekerk feels that bowling accurately and consistently putting batters under pressure will be a key factor in their bid to win the tournament.
DANE VAN NIEKERK SOUTH AFRICA CAPTAIN "We have to find ways to bowl with the wet ball, both teams are going to have to bowl with it and I said to the team it is not going to be the best batting team at the World Cup it is going to be the best bowling team that is going to take the World Cup home, I saw that in the T20s, the people that handle the pressure a bit more with the bowling came out on top."
Hilton Moreeng's team twice came from behind to level the ODI and T20 series and the national coach feels that the character shown bodes well for the tournament next month, but they can ill afford to rest on their laurels.
HILTON MOREENG SOUTH AFRICA COACH "For us as a team we are very happy with the character that we have shown but we realised going into the World Cup you can't keep doing that to ourselves, we need to make sure we are ready from ball one, from the first game onwards we need to make sure that as far as plans and executions on the day we need to be spot on."
Van Niekerk's team is aiming to do something their male counterparts are yet to do and that's to win a World Cup and the talented skipper believes they have the players to get the job done.
DANE VAN NIEKERK SOUTH AFRICA CAPTAIN "If you look at the squad we have, we have world class players first of all and we have got match winners so it is more than realistic to go there and say that we going there to win the tournament but I guess we just have to rock up and with the added advantage hopefully you know we can use that and bring that cup home."
SIAS DU PLESSIS JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA "The Proteas would have learnt invaluable lessons from their trip, not only on their opposition, but also on the conditions, especially at night with the dew factor that makes gripping the ball when bowling second extremely tough, the intel gathered will see a slight change in approach that coach Moreeng believes will give his team the best chance of claiming their first ever ICC silverware, Sias du Plessis, CGTN, Johannesburg."
