Who could be a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee?
In an exclusive interview on CGTN’s Dialogue, Saturday night, Mo Tianquan, a member of the 13th Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee listed four standards:
First, one needs to be "a representative in some fields, in some group of people".
Second, one needs to be "politically right", which is also crucial. One needs to "recognize China's political system, China's own road".
Third, one does very well in some fields, or some industries, some special entities.
Other than that, one should not have something very bad. One needs to be "a good citizen or be a good businessman, a good serviceman in government, including tax issue, discipline, and many other things".
“Combined these things together, then the leadership will negotiate with different parties and different organizations; Eventually, they are going to have the final candidates out,” Mo concluded.
Different from the Western-style multiparty system, China adopts a system of multiparty cooperation and political consultation under the leadership of the Communist Party of China. Partly because of this, many people in the West say China is not a Republic.
In response to that, Zhang Weiwei, director of the China Institute at Fudan University noted: “China is very different; We call it the People’s Republic of China. That’s the People’s Republic. The ordinary people have tremendous influence in many ways. If we look at the agenda setting, how the agenda is set for the CPPCC, and for the National People's Congress which is coming very soon."
"We have all kinds of surveys; People care about education, people care about pensions, about medical reform and many other reforms. We do these accordingly. For the United States, look at the gun control, for decades (there is) no solution,” Zhang added.
