It's his first visit to Beijing. The day after El Salvador's President Salvador Sanchez Ceren touched down, his Chinese counterpart President Xi Jinping held a welcoming ceremony for him. During their talks, the two leaders agreed to cooperate on multiple fields, including trade, investment, industry and human resources. El Salvador wants to expand its ties with China under the Belt and Road Initiative. While China is willing to provide support to the Central American country on health, medical treatment and disaster prevention.
El Salvador broke off diplomatic ties with Taipei in favor of Beijing in August - in support of the One-China Principle. Both China and El Salvador reiterate that their establishment of ties is in accordance with international law, and fulfills the interests of both peoples.
