China and the Dominican Republic have signed a joint communique in Beijing to establish diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level. The Dominican Republic has ended diplomatic ties with Taiwan, and now only recognises the People's Republic of China without any conditions. Zheng Yibing reports.
A warm handshake for new diplomatic ties. The foreign ministers of China and the Dominican Republic have agreed to develop friendly relations, on the basis of mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity.
WANG YI CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTER "The bilateral ties have entered a new chapter in history. From now on, China has a good friend in Latin America to support each other. And the Dominican Republic has a partner with mutual benefits in its way of development and rejuvenation. Both will become brothers in boosting south-to-south cooperation and protect the interests of developing countries."
The Dominican Republic recognizes there is but one China in the world, that the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China, and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory.

Both countries agreed to send ambassadors to each other as soon as possible. The Dominican Republic is China’s largest business partner in the Caribbean, and China is its second largest source of imports. Bilateral business volume in 2017 stood at 1.87 billion US dollars. And the establishment of diplomatic ties will further improve relations.
