'Olympic Madman' Chen Guanming killed in Argentina

People across the world have been paying tribute to Chen Guanming, famous for travelling around the world on his tricycle, who was killed in a car crash during the Latin American part of his journey, near San Julián, Argentina on Thursday.

61-year-old Chen Guanming was a farmer from eastern China’s Jiangsu Province. Chen first crossed China by tricycle in 2001 and decided to travel across both China and the world promoting “Olympic spirit” after Beijing held the Olympic Games in 2008. Chen arrived in London to attend the Olympic Games in 2012 after cycling across Eurasia.
In order to attend the Olympic Games 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Chen had to save up and travel by sea. The car accident happened during his journey to Tokyo for the 2020 Olympic Games.

In 2015, Chen Guiming said to Xinhua’s reporter: "I want to apply for three Guinness World Records. First, for riding a tricycle to the highest mountain in the world, I reached the peak at 7600 meters above sea level in Tibet. Second, the world's longest riding distance of over 150,000 kilometers; And three, I drive the world 's smallest "motor home." My tricycle is only 2.1 meters long and 83 cm wide, an area of less than 1.8 square meters."
