There's been a surge in the number of travelers in China at the start of the week-long National Day holiday. Our reporter He Weiwei tells us how Guangzhou's international airport in the South of China is coping.
HE WEIWEI GUANGZHOU BAIYUN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT "I'm now at the third busiest airport in China, after Beijing and Shanghai. The travel peak at this airport started two days ago and since then has hit 200 thousand travelers per day. Today there's been a total of 1,300 flights arriving and departing from Baiyun International, and that number is likely to rise as the holiday gets into full swing. So far the airport is running smoothly without much delays. The national holiday is the last seven-day-long holiday of the year, and people usually take this chance to go travel or return home. According to China Southern Airlines, which is based here in Guangzhou, the most popular destinations overseas include Australia, North America and East Asian countries like Japan, South Korea and Thailand.
To better serve passengers, several measures have been taken. First, electronic boarding passes are being used. China Southern Airlines was the first in China to support paperless boarding starting two years ago. Now this service is available at its counters across 41 domestic and international airports, including 5 in Seoul, Dubai, Kuala Lumpur, Melbourne and Brisbane. Besides, intercity shuttle buses and ferries are in operation, for example, passengers can take a ferry from Shenzhen airport directly to HK and other nearby cities. Last, security checks have been intensified to guarantee passenger safety."
