Politicians, key opinion leaders and researchers from all around the globe are trying to find solutions to security challenges. That's the agenda for the seventh World Peace Forum in Tsinghua University in Beijing. Our reporter Zheng Yibing has the details.
An annual gathering to discuss how to attain world peace. This year, the two-day forum has its eye on three things: Equality, equity and justice.
YANG JIECHI DIRECTOR, CENTRAL FOREIGN AFFAIRS COMMISSION "In this day and age, no one can stay unscathed from external risks or achieve so-called 'absolute security' on its own. Hence, we must stick together."
Discussions not only include anti-terrorism and anti-nuclear proliferation, but also trade conflicts and financial risks. Many speakers say trade conflicts may lead to a global crisis, and that dialogues are important.
SHAUKAT AZIZ FORMER PAKISTANI PRIME MINISTER "It is important to keep channels of communication open even with the most difficult circumstances and situations, we must never run away from dialogue and diplomacy. These are the key factors for solving the issues we face."
Cooperation with each other is encouraged.
HERMAN VAN ROMPUY FORMER PRESIDENT OF EUROPEAN COUNCIL "The EU wants a positive agenda with China, about what we can do to our bilateral relationship. China and EU will then stand stronger in our endeavours for keeping the world economy as open as possible."
Beijing is stressing the importance of common development, saying that would fundamentally solve much of global conflict and turbulence, and that China will continue to play an important role in this process.
ZHENG YIBING BEIJING "Participants say this is a time when security issues are more interconnected, contagious and perilous. And therefore, it's very important for all sides to group together, share their thoughts, and find ways to safeguard world peace and security. Zheng Yibing, CGTN, Beijing."
